Compress PDF

Reduce PDF file size in your browser with four compression levels, batch processing and a ZIP download.

Browser-based processing is used where supported. Review each tool's privacy notes before entering sensitive information.

Reduce PDF overhead before sharing or uploading

Compress PDF is designed for cases where a document is structurally larger than necessary. You choose a Low, Medium, High or Lossless level, see the size saved for each file, and decide whether the result is worth using.

What this compressor changes

PDF size is influenced by fonts, images, duplicated objects, metadata, and the way the file was originally saved. Low, Medium and High re-render each page as a JPEG image at about 144, 108 or 72 dpi, which shrinks image-heavy files the most but makes text non-selectable. Lossless only rewrites the file structure, keeping text, links and appearance.

A text-heavy report may shrink noticeably, while an already optimized scan or image-heavy brochure may change very little. The result should be measured, not assumed.

How to evaluate the result

Download the compressed copy, open it in the application your recipient will use, and inspect representative pages. Check small text, annotations, forms, images, links, and page count before replacing an original.

If the output is not smaller or a feature is important, keep the source PDF. Compression is an optional optimization, not a substitute for a document backup.

  • ✓ Compare file sizes
  • ✓ Inspect the first, middle, and last pages
  • ✓ Keep the original until delivery is confirmed

When another approach is better

A scanned PDF may require image downsampling or OCR-specific optimization, which is outside this browser utility. A PDF containing embedded media or complex forms may also need the application that created it.

For a strict upload limit, first try this tool, then consider exporting a lower-resolution scan from the original authoring application if the result remains too large.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will compression always make a PDF smaller?

No. The result depends on the original PDF structure. Already optimized or image-heavy files may have little removable overhead.

Does compression lower image quality?

Low, Medium and High re-render pages as JPEG images, so quality and text selection are reduced. Lossless keeps the pages as they are and only rewrites the structure.

Is the original file replaced?

No. A separate compressed PDF is generated for download, and several files can be saved together as a ZIP.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will every PDF become much smaller?

No. If a result is not smaller, the tool keeps your original and says so. Try a higher level or the Lossless level.

Is the original file changed?

No. A new output PDF is created for download.
